The YMCA of Greater Long Beach is raising funds in support of our Bikes for Kids Program. The Bikes for Kids Program aims to provide free bicycles to third grade students attending under served schools in the YMCA of Greater Long Beach service area. Through our Bikes for Kids Program, we have given away over 1,000 bicycles, which for many of our recipients, it has been the first bike they have ever owned.
Our Bikes for Kids program is divided into four special events:
In order to be eligible to receive a bike (includes a helmet and lock), students must write an essay that describes how a bike would help them make their community a better place. YMCA staff, community partners, and volunteers build over 150 bikes in preparation for the assembly. During the bike giveaway assembly, the essay contest winners are revealed and are presented with their new bike. What students don't know is that not only do the essay contest winners receive a bike, everyone gets a bike!
Together, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of many children, giving them a chance to experience the joy and freedom that comes with having their very own bike.
