“All of us have a role to play in addressing climate change and the degradation of our ocean. But not everyone has the same access. The goal of this program is to open the door to as many environmental stewards, advocates, allies, and young scientists as possible,” - Dr. Peter Kareiva, Aquarium of the Pacific president and CEO.
Opening Doors for Future Marine Scientists
The CELP Scholar Program—Community, Equity, Learning, and Persistence— creates pathways for students from historically underrepresented backgrounds to excel in marine sciences. Currently, only 8.8% of ocean science graduates come from minority communities, with even fewer progressing to professional roles (NSF, Corey Garza, 2021). We believe it’s time for change.
This year, we proudly sponsored 15 scholars, empowering diverse voices to shape the future of our oceans. With your help, we can go even further.
We're challenging our Long Beach Gives community to help us raise $40,000 for the 2025 cohort. Your generous gift will provide these scholars each with a $10,000 scholarship, professional development opportunities, introductions to scientists and conservation leaders in the marine sciences field, access to participation in Aquarium programs, and a growing network of peers.
Your Gift Can Change Lives
Your donation can help a student overcome financial obstacles, connect with leaders in the field, and stay resilient in their pursuit of marine science careers. By giving today, you’re not just supporting individual students—you’re building a more diverse and inclusive future for ocean conservation.
Together, we can build a brighter, more inclusive future for marine science.
Thank you for supporting your Aquarium!
