Mosaic Movement prides itself in creating an opportunity to teach children in underserved communities how to manage communication challenges, while also providing them with emotionally supportive tools to help them navigate through life's drastic changes.
Our program in Long Beach is geared to assist children discover their voice and build on their identity. The purpose of our program is to be a bridge between home and elementary school. Our goal by the end of our program is for children to be equipped with learning strategies and be able to speak for themselves by the time they start school. With these skills alone we help support them in academics while also supporting their social skills in creating and maintaining healthy relationships.
We target 6 areas:
1. Social Emotional Learning (SEL) - we work with children to identify emotions, teach them to respond to daily frustrations by having them choose positive coping skills (i.e., breathing, counting, squeezing a ball, etc.), and finally we create dialogue on ways they can express themselves effectively.
2. Communication - our goal is for each child to discover the power of their voice by the time they finish our program. Each child will engage in activities that promote community, team building, debate, and advocacy.
3 & 4. Fine Motor & Gross Motor - our goal is for each child to be self-sufficient; we accomplish this is by incorporating daily tasks (i.e., holding and using a pencil or stacking blocks). In addition, we teach skills related to movements of large muscles (i.e., legs, arms, and hands) and help children reach their developmental milestones (i.e., kicking a ball, going upstairs, opening a container, etc.). Each time a child accomplishes a goal independently, it increases their confidence and builds their self-esteem.
5. Physical Activity - our goal is for physical activity to be part of a child's daily routine. This component helps us teach children how to release tensions and frustrations, all while supporting and balancing a child's emotions and coordination.
6. Developmental Milestones -we teach skills based on a child's developmental stage. At our program we help each child get to their developmental age and make sure they're ready for the next one.
My wife and I noticed that our 2-year-old son was extremely shy and nervous around new people, even other kids. After taking the advice and tips from Lucy (Mosaic Movement's counselor) on how we could get our son 'out of his shell'. We noticed an instant improvement after doing what she said and we are so excited to see how he opens to everyone in the room, including hugs and high-fives for adults and his peers alike. We are so proud of our son, and we love watching his confidence grow! I highly recommend Mosaic Movement for any of your child's developmental needs!
My experience at Los NiƱos Center was a great eye opener as I witnessed firsthand everything I learned in the classroom and read about in textbooks. The director of educational development was the person I worked closely with and the person who guided me on how to facilitate child development activities. It was alongside her that I learned the different assessment methods to help children meet their developmental milestones. Overall, working with children in the center was such an amazing experience and I cannot wait to continue to grow in my career. GM, LNC Summer Intern 2022
Mosaic Movement's mission is to positively impact families in communities that often experience disparities due to the historical marginalization of groups and to improve the learning opportunities within urban communities. We focus on community building and development and work to unite, bring awareness and resources to children, adolescents and adults.
